Light Up the Lake: A Christmas Tradition

Updated: May 25, 2023

Christmas traditions can be magical and turn into lifelong memories for your family. One of our family’s Christmas traditions has been going to the Light Up the Lake, a holiday festival at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, Texas.

Light Up the Lake is a free two-day holiday festival around the lake at Old Settlers Park that features spectacular Christmas lights, giant balloons hovering over the lake, holiday displays, family activities, food and drinks, and live music. This year’s bands featured GONE TO TEXAS, Anders Drerup Band, and Royal Velvetee.

Magical lights, music, and lots of walking

Our family enjoyed walking around the lake (twice!) to look at all the Christmas lights, listen to the music, and get in the Christmas spirit. The food and refreshment vendors offered Texas barbeque, popcorn, kettle corn, pretzels, paninis, and of course, beer from local Texas breweries.

Both years that we’ve gone to the festival, we’ve been able to snag a spot to sit at Yonder’s Point to listen to one of the local bands. Our son has enjoyed dancing and playing on one of the terraced seating areas.

I like how this festival offers a variety of fun for the family. We tend to gravitate toward the “calmer” band near Yonder’s Point while we have a snack and gaze at the lights around the lake.

The lights really are magical and should be able to get even your Grinch into the holiday spirit (no guarantees). Some of our favorite lights this year included the decorated fire truck, all the colorful trees, the giant balloons featuring a snowman, Santa and Rudolph, and of course, the changing lights on the bridge as you walk around the lake.

The event was on Friday and Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The official lighting of the lake lights happens at 6:30 p.m. both nights, but some Christmas lights are already on if you get there early. There is plenty of parking, but the traffic getting into the park can get pretty busy so be patient depending on the route you take to get to Old Settlers Park.

This year’s holiday light festival is already over, but I imagine the city will be having the festival again next year around the same weekend. Mark your calendars for the first Friday and Saturday in December 2023 for next year’s Light Up the Lake festival at Old Settlers Park. We will definitely be there to kick off the holiday season!
