Sweatin’ the summer away

Summer is almost over, if only because the school year is about to begin. That doesn’t mean the heat is going anywhere anytime soon though. July has been the hottest in recorded history in Austin this year, and it definitely felt like it.

This summer has been filled with a lot of great memories. We enjoyed visiting family and friends and finding some fun things to do while we were up north. Back home, we’ve been able to try a few new restaurants and explore new parks.

The hot summer has led to us playing with water balloons, going to splash pads, and cooling off in our inflatable pool in the backyard. Our family has enjoyed making smoothies and trying to make frozen fruit soft serve with the Yonanas machine. It is good, but we are still figuring out how to create the right consistency.

When we moved to Texas a few years ago, I knew the summer heat could make it difficult to enjoy summer. The summer sun is hot. It’s often the only thing you see in the sky most days. But I will say that it does get easier to be outside and enjoy summertime activities. You just need to be prepared. My tips so far:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing

  • Try to find shade

  • Realize that you will sweat, and that’s OK!

Summertime should be filled with fun memories - and we are making the most of the summer despite it being in the 100s every day. At some point the temperatures will go down. I just hope it isn’t this hot in October when we are trying to enjoy fall. Only time will tell. Until then, I’m going to keep enjoying the hot summer and make the most of it.
