Saying goodbye to a pet is never easy. I didn’t realize it would be so hard.
Our family said goodbye to one of our dogs, a pug, in February. How do you say goodbye to someone who’s been a part of your life for the last 13 years - and not just a part of your life, but part of every single day for over a decade.
It’s been over a month, and we still miss her. It’s a strange feeling when you look around expecting to see a little dog staring at you and they are no longer there.
I feel like I’m mourning the loss of something more than a pet. 13 years of taking care of one of the neediest, sweetest dogs. She was always by my side. Never got sick of being around me. Didn’t care what I did, she just wanted to be there.
I wrote this the day after we said goodbye to Lola:
13 years.
13 years of love.
13 years of playing with you, feeding you, walking you, snuggling you.
I’m sorry for letting you go.
13 years and suddenly you’re gone and I’m supposed to pretend like you were just a dog?
You were my dog. My sweet dog.
I can’t wait until the day comes where the thought of you will bring a smile to my lips instead of a tear to my eye.
We are going to plant a Pugster Blue Butterfly bush in our backyard this spring to help us remember her. Wish me luck in finding a small pug statue or flag that doesn’t cost too much and still actually looks like a pug.
